Whether your style is bold and colorful or subtle and sophisticated, Jacket Lab is your opportunity to design and create a garment that reflects your personality. Explore embroidery, appliqué, couching, decorative stitching, and embellishment while working alongside experienced educators in a collaborative, inspiring studio environment.

This isn't a step-by-step class—it's a creative lab. You'll receive expert guidance, demonstrations, and individualized support while bringing your own unique vision to life.

Friday Evening: Design Studio

5:30 PM – 8:00 PM

Friday evening is all about inspiration, planning, and preparing for a successful studio day.

During this session you'll:

• Explore finished jacket samples and creative inspiration

• Learn about embroidery placement and design composition

• See demonstrations of appliqué, couching, decorative stitching, and embellishment techniques

• Sketch and plan your jacket design

• Meet one-on-one with our educators to discuss your project

• Select fabrics, trims, thread, stabilizers, and embellishments

You'll leave Friday evening with a clear design plan and everything you need to begin creating on Saturday.

Saturday: Jacket Lab Studio

10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Saturday is dedicated to creating your wearable work of art.

Bring your sewing and embroidery machine (if you have one), and spend the day working at your own pace with guidance from the North Shore Quilting team.

Throughout the day you'll have access to:

• BERNINA embroidery machines for demonstrations and select techniques

• Sergers and specialty finishing equipment

• Expert instruction and individualized coaching

• Creative problem-solving and design assistance

• Inspiration from fellow makers

Our educators will be available throughout the day to answer questions, demonstrate techniques, and help you achieve the look you're envisioning.

Techniques You'll Explore

• Embroidery placement and design scaling

• Machine appliqué

• Couching with decorative fibers

• Decorative thread techniques

• Trims, lace, patches, and embellishments

• Creative fabric layering

• Professional finishing techniques

• Combining multiple techniques into one cohesive design

No two jackets will be alike—your creativity is the only limit!

Supplies

Students should bring:

• A jacket to embellish (denim, canvas, twill, utility jacket, chore coat, or similar)
• Sewing machine and/or embroidery machine in good working order, please let us know upon booking if you would like to use one of our classroom machines.
• Basic sewing supplies

Every jacket is unique, so materials are selected individually based on your personal design.

During the Friday Design Studio, you'll work with our educators to develop your vision and determine exactly what materials you'll need. Once your design is finalized, you'll choose and purchase the fabrics, trims, threads, embellishments, and other decorative elements that best bring your project to life.

North Shore Quilting & Fiber Art will provide all necessary interfacing and stabilization materials as part of your class fee.

Additional project materials—including fabrics, decorative threads, trims, ribbons, appliqués, patches, and specialty embellishments—are not included in the class fee and will be available for purchase during the event. This allows you to customize your jacket while only purchasing the supplies needed for your individual design.

No two jackets will be alike, and neither will the materials used!

Visit our Jacket Bar, featuring a curated selection of jackets chosen specifically for upcycling and wearable art. These garments make the perfect foundation for embroidery, appliqué, and creative embellishment.

Please Note: Jacket availability, styles, and sizes are limited. We encourage students to bring their own jacket whenever possible to ensure the best fit.

Skill Level

Advanced Beginner and up.

Students should be comfortable operating their sewing machine. Embroidery experience is helpful but not required.
